Property hunters in France have had the luxury of a buyer’s market for some time now. For the past year or two, we’ve heard all about vendors having to drop their prices and being more open to negotiation, of property prices settling at a more reasonable level following a few years of rising values, and of fantastic bargains out there for the taking. All true, of course, but how long will this state of househunting nirvana last?
All the signs are that, if you’re looking for a property, whether actively or still just dreaming, you shouldn’t hang around for too much longer. Many would-be French property owners have held off for the past year or so, waiting to see which way exchange rates would go, or for property prices to bottom out. Meanwhile their savings, presuming they have some, linger in bank accounts earning little or no interest. Now, as the various EU countries inch out of recession, the conditions for growth – and rising property prices – are slowly improving.
If you’re planning on financing your property purchase with a French mortgage, you should seriously consider buying now before interest rates rise. Somewhat ironically, people rushing to get a fixed-rate mortgage while rates remain low is bound to have an inflatory effect on property prices, which are already starting to creep up again. So, perhaps you should be asking yourself, is the time to buy now?
