Ferry travel goes from strength to strength

P&O is beating the low-cost airlines at their own game as it reported a 35% rise in bookings over the Easter break compared to the same period last year.

“All inclusive ferry fares that cover a car and passenger are tempting families away from flying as they try to make their money go further,” explained Simon Johnson, sales and marketing director at P&O.

Between Good Friday and Easter Monday, the company carried 132,000 passengers on its Dover-Calais service, compared to 98,000 in 2008.

“At a time when many travel pundits say the bottom has fallen out of the overseas Easter tourist market, we’re bucking the trend,” added Johnson.

P&O’s success will be welcome news for holiday homeowners on the north coast of France, who will no doubt benefit from an influx of tourists from Blighty.
