Perigueux Basillac airport
Commercial flights have resumed this month (April) at the Perigueux Basillac airport in south-west France for the first time since 2005.
Some Euro 650,000 has been spent, largely by France's Interior Ministry, in upgrading the airport and its 750 metres long runway, for the introduction of twice daily flights to Paris Orly Ouest by French airline Twin Jet, which operates Beech 1900 aircraft.
Some 10 people will be employed at the airport, which has mainly been used for private flights, a flying school and gliding operations for the last four years.
High costs were blamed for the closure of the airport in 2005, which at that time handled some 30,000 passengers a year. Now Perigueux mayor Xavier Darcos says the annual running costs, including salaries, will be around Euro 300,000, much financed by the local council, the local chamber of commerce and industry. The number of passengers being handled is expected to reach around 9000 per year.
One way fares to Paris are Euro 220, and round trip specials cost about Euro375.
Twin Jet,which was started in May 2001, is based in Aix en Provence, and operates European regional flights and has also just launched a regular daily Toulouse-Brest service.
